Pink EyePink eye, pinkeye, or conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the clear film that covers the white part of the eye and the inside surface of the eyelids, the conjunctiva. Pink eye is a common condition caused by a number of factors including the bacteria and viruses responsible for colds, sore throats, ear infections, sinus infections, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea. Allergens like pollen, dust mites, and animal dander can cause conjunctivitis, especially in kids with allergies.
In some individuals, physical conditions like narrow or blocked tear ducts can also lead to pink eye. Even environmental pollutants and irritants like chemicals, soaps, fumes, and smoke can cause it. For those living near a manufacturer of these pollutants, chronic eye infections and other forms of chronic allergies is not uncommon. For these individuals, pinkeye infections may be an indicator of a much larger problem. Special care should be taken with infants due to their lack of anti-bodies. Older children that have sensitivities or allergies to environmental factors should also be careful of these irritants and pollutants. Conjunctivitis that is caused by viruses or bacteria is very contagious, while the type caused allergens and irritants are not transmittable. Contagious forms of pink eye can spread in a number of ways including: sharing a towel, sneezing, coughing, touching, and even swimming in water with kids that have conjunctivitis. For those children with siblings and parents, the chances of this infection spreading is very high unless medical attention is sought immediately. Lesser strains of the infection can clear up on their own, but most forms of pinkeye infections require special treatment like an antibiotic cream or eye drops.
The chances of permanent injury or reoccurring symptoms is significantly lessened when the condition is eradicated with the assistance and insight of a pediatrician. Common symptoms include eye irritation, red eyes, and irritation of the eyelid lining. Some of the other noticeable symptoms can include sensitivity to light, eye discharge, and swollen or puffy eyes.
